Made a Mistake in Your ITR? How to File a Revised Return for AY 2026-27

A wrong figure, a missed deduction or a forgotten income source is fixable. The revised return lets you correct your ITR, and for AY 2026-27 you now have until 31 March 2027 to do it.

What's in this guide
  1. What a revised return is
  2. The new 31 March 2027 deadline
  3. How many times you can revise
  4. How to file a revised return

Filing your ITR and then spotting a mistake is common, a missed interest income, a deduction you forgot to claim, a wrong bank detail. The law lets you fix it through a revised return under Section 139(5), and a recent change gives you much more time than before.

What a revised return is

A revised return replaces your original ITR with a corrected version. Once filed and verified, the revised return is treated as your return for that year. You can use it to correct almost any genuine error, whether it increases or decreases your tax.

The new 31 March 2027 deadline

This is the important update: the revised return window has been extended from 31 December to 31 March of the assessment year. For AY 2026-27, that means you can revise your return up to 31 March 2027, giving you far more breathing room to catch and fix errors after filing.

How many times you can revise

There is no limit on the number of times you can revise, as long as each revision is within the deadline. You can even revise a return that was itself filed late (a belated return). The practical advice is to get it right in as few revisions as possible, since repeated revisions can attract attention.

How to file a revised return

You file a revised return on the same portal, selecting "revised return" and quoting the acknowledgement number of your original filing. Because a revision changes your assessed income, it is worth having a Chartered Accountant confirm the correction is complete and consistent, so you are not revising again.
